Maintaining Health and Wellness in the New Year
It’s the New Year: a time for reflection, resolutions, and health and wellness. We, at Ackerman Cancer Center, know the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and encourage our patients to do the same. Located below is a list of ways to stay healthy and well this New Year.
- Establishing healthy eating habits. Eating in a nutritious and healthy way is vital for a healthy life. Eating healthy does not have to be hard. The key is to make small and realistic goals first, then stick to them. By doing this, the lifestyle change does not seem so drastic and will be easier to follow. Overall, you will feel better and have more energy to do activities. Some tips to eating healthier include not skipping any meals; eating healthy snacks in between breakfast, lunch, and dinner; not overeating; eating foods rich in protein; reducing carb intake; eating more fruits and veggies; and eating more whole grains. By eating and drinking less sugar and processed foods, your body will feel a difference. The goal is to make small changes first, so you don’t overwhelm yourself.
- Exercising daily. On average, a healthy adult should be moderately exercising at least 150 minutes a week, or 30 mins a day for five days. Some examples of moderate exercise include a brisk walk, swimming, dancing, cycling, and jogging, to name a few. You can also include weight training, if you would like, for those who are more advanced in daily exercise. Not everyone exercise plan will be the same, as everyone’s wellness path is different. The takeaway is to make regular physical activity a part of your daily lifestyle or lifestyle change.
- Getting a good night’s sleep. For some, getting a full night of rest is nearly impossible. The average time an individual sleeps is 6.8 hours a night. The recommended sleep time, however, is seven to nine hours for a healthy adult. Everyone has different things going on in their life that can affect their sleep schedule and sometimes getting a good night’s rest is at the bottom of the totem pole of priorities. This New Year, make it a goal to get a full night of sleep, even if you have to train your body to do so. This will really give your body the energy boost it needs to stay healthy and well.
- Reducing stress. Being overly stressed can affect your health. It is important to start the New Year with a clean slate. Stress can be caused by many different things, some of which can be controlled, such as work, relationships, and bills. Some ways to handle stress include deep breathing, listening to classical music, relaxation exercises, taking a hot bath, yoga, or simply meeting up with a friend just to talk. Being able to handle your stressors can help your body be more relaxed. Make this a priority this New Year.
Maintaining your health and wellness into the New Year should be of utmost importance. Make yourself a priority in 2019. Commit to making this year your best year yet!
