At Ackerman Cancer Center, treatment of thyroid cancer is always centered on the individual patient. Individuals with thyroid cancer may undergo thyroidectomy (surgical removal of the thyroid gland). After surgery, an oral thyroid hormone medication will be required for life.
Radioactive iodine may be given after thyroidectomy to destroy any remaining thyroid tissue. Radiation therapy can sometimes be used in place of surgery or if the cancer continues to grow following radiative iodine treatment.
