Scars (Keloids)
Scars (Keloids)
Radiation therapy is an effective option for noncancerous conditions including keloid scars.
Keloid Scar Treatment
Keloid scars are an overgrowth of scar tissue and are often larger than the original wound itself. Although they are not a health concern, you may want to have these scars removed for cosmetic reasons. The specialists at Ackerman Cancer Center are experienced in removing keloid scars with radiation.
Treatments
Radiation therapy is an effective treatment for keloids, alone or in combination with surgery. Radiation delivered immediately after surgical scar removal has been shown to successfully reduce keloid recurrence in up to 92% of cases.
Patients at Ackerman Cancer Center have access to some of the most advanced radiation technology available, including:
-
Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy that delivers a higher dose of radiation directly to the tumor, the area near it, or the site following tumor removal. This approach helps protect surrounding healthy tissue. Ackerman Cancer Center performs brachytherapy treatments such as prostate seed implants, APBI, and Valencia® for skin cancer.
-
Electron Beam Radiation Therapy
Electron Radiotherapy is a form of external beam radiation that delivers electrons to the tumor site using the Elekta Medical Linear Accelerator.
