Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM)

Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) is a cutting-edge technology that permits evaulation of breast tissue for signs of early breast cancer, with a high degree of sensitivity.

Dr. Gaelyn Scuderi, Director of Women’s Imaging, is the only physician in Northeast Florida performing CEM.

Why Choose Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) at Ackerman Breast Clinic

Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) is a diagnostic procedure that is especially beneficial to women with dense breasts or who are at high risk of breast cancer.

When you want answers fast, contrast-enhanced mammography provides exceptional confidence and clarity to help rule out cancer.

What sets CEM apart

CEM uses an IV iodinated contrast — the same type of contrast used in CT scans – to assess the behavior of the breast tissue.

CEM is performed as part of a Diagnostic Mammogram exam, in which both the contrast-enhanced image and a 2D mammogram are acquired at the same time, while the breast is compressed.

Two sets of mammogram images are shown side by side for comparison. The top set is labeled "2D Mammogram" and displays four breast images with dense tissue patterns, labeled RCC, LCC, RMLO, and LMLO. The bottom set is labeled "Contrast-Enhanced Mammogram" and shows the same four views with enhanced contrast, highlighting areas of interest with less dense background tissue visible. The contrast-enhanced images reveal clearer differentiation of certain regions within the breast tissue compared to the 2D mammogram images.

The Procedure - What To Expect

Step 1

Patient undergoing CEM will have an IV placed in their arm by our nursing staff prior to their mammogram.

Step 2

Patient will enter the mammogram room and, while seated, receive a 30–45 second injection of iodine-based CT contrast.

Step 3

Patient will be disconnected from the contrast, stand up, and undergo a typical mammogram exam (consisting of 4–8 images under compression, just like a classic mammogram).

Step 4

The Radiologist will interpret the images in real time and may recommend performance of additional mammogram views, or a breast ultrasound to complete the evaluation.

Step 5

Immediately after completion of the imaging exam, the patient will meet with the Radiologist to discuss the results.
