Our Story

Our story is always evolving, because every person who walks through our door becomes part of it.

A man in a white lab coat with "Ackerman Cancer Center" and "Scott Ackerman, MD, FACR" embroidered on it is smiling and talking to a woman with short white hair. The woman is wearing a beige dress and a colorful orange, pink, and brown scarf. They are standing in a modern, warmly lit interior with a wooden textured wall and white chairs in the background. The partial text "ACKERMAN" is visible on the wall behind them.

Scot Ackerman, MD, FACR, a Board Certified radiation oncologist with a background in biomedical engineering, built his practice at the intersection where technology and care meet. After a successful career within a hospital setting, he founded Ackerman Cancer Center in 1997 to provide patients with an accessible alternative to larger institutions. The practice grew to a second location in Amelia Island in 1998, and continues to flourish today with offices now in Riverside and World Golf Village as well.

We are proud to be the first and only physician-owned proton therapy center in the world, as well as North Florida’s only independent radiation oncology practice for now 37 years. Every day, our expert radiation oncologists, social workers, nurses, therapists, and psychologists connect directly with patients and caregivers. Our independence also allows us to collaborate with physicians across the region to develop personalized treatment plans. This approach yields a level of trust that is hard to replicate — and impossible to replace.

“Taking cancer personally” is more than a tagline; it’s a mindset shared by our entire patient-centric team. We want you to feel that you’re in the right place from the moment you arrive

Together, we look forward to helping you rewrite cancer’s role in your story.
