What is Proton Therapy?
Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation treatment that uses proton beams to precisely target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. It can be used alone or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy, providing a highly effective and customized approach to treatment.
How It Works
Protons are energized particles that move swiftly through healthy tissue, depositing cancer-destroying radiation at the tumor site. This pinpoint accuracy is possible because of the Bragg Peak, a physical property of protons that allows radiation to release maximum energy directly within the tumor, with virtually no radiation traveling beyond it. This reduces damage to nearby organs and helps protect healthy tissue.
The Ackerman Advantage
Of the 47 oncology centers in the United States offering proton therapy, six of which are in Florida, Ackerman Cancer Center is proud to be the first private, physician-owned practice to provide this advanced treatment. We deliver world-class cancer care that combines innovative proton technology with personalized treatment planning.
With more than 3,250 patients treated on-site, Ackerman continues to lead in compassionate, cutting-edge cancer care. Our goal is to reduce side effects, support faster recovery, and guide every patient with personalized care from diagnosis through recovery.
The Power of the MEVION System
At Ackerman, proton therapy is delivered using the American-made MEVION system, one of the most compact and efficient technologies available today. Equipped with DirectDose™ beam modulating technology, it shapes and regulates proton beams with remarkable precision to match each patient’s unique treatment plan.
The Benefits of Proton Therapy
- Quicker recovery
- Fewer side effects
- Higher success rate
- Less damage to healthy tissue
- Lower risk of secondary cancers
Accuracy That Heals, Safety That Reassures
Our system features full robotic positioning, ensuring sub-millimeter accuracy and optimal alignment for every session. Prior to each treatment, imaging is used to verify exact positioning—no radiation is delivered until alignment is confirmed. This process ensures the highest dose precision directly to the tumor while sparing surrounding tissues and organs.
Treatment Sites
Proton therapy is a proven option for treating many new and recurrent cancers, particularly those that are irregularly shaped or located near vital structures, including: Bladder cancer, Breast cancer, Head and Neck cancer, Kidney cancer, Prostate cancer, and more.
At Ackerman Cancer Center, we’re proud to celebrate 11 years of proton therapy excellence, advancing accuracy, safety, and healing for patients throughout the Southeast.
